Fairtrade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and
sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for
producers and workers who have been economically disadvantaged or
marginalised by the conventional trading system. If fair access to
markets under better trade conditions would help them to overcome
barriers to development, they can join Fairtrade.

"At The Red Lion Country Inn we not
only look after our customers but are conscious of the impact we have
upon the environment.
Naturally we only purchase the finest quality
ingredients for all our menus however we have recently expanded our
requirements to include items that meet environmental
standards of production and sustainability. This includes products that
are locally sourced, certified as Red Tractor, Freedom Foods, items that
are Fairtrade compliant, fish and seafood that meet standards established by
the Marine Steward Council and products confirmed by the Soil Association as
being organic.
The ethically sourcing of food
not only ensures fewer additives, preservatives and chemical are used in
their production but in our opinion, also improves the taste."

What is organic food?
Most farming relies heavily on artificial chemical
fertilizers and pesticides. Around 350 pesticides are permitted, and
it's estimated that around 4.5billion litres are used annually.
Whilst there are Government rules about
accepted levels of pesticide residues in our food, there
are be concerns about their long-term effect.
Agrochemicals and artificial fertilizers can harm the environment too.
Organic agriculture is carried out to a set of legally
defined standards. Producers then pay to have their produce monitored
and certified by one of several organic organisations, of which the
Bristol-based Soil Association is by far the largest in the UK.
Organic farming strictly limits the use of
artificial chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Antibiotics for animals
are kept to an absolute minimum. Instead it emphasises farming methods
such as crop rotation to keep the soil healthy and natural
pest-control systems. Genetically modified crops are forbidden.
Organic bodies also demand more space for animals and higher
standards of welfare.
